Weight Training 34/2024: Restarting Muscle Growth

Today was a recovery day from running, so I hit the gym for a weight training session. After two months focused solely on preparing for my first half-marathon, it felt great to return to PikBox Gym.

Warmup

Started with a good warmup, trying to remember everything I’ve learned about preparing my muscles.

Workout

  • First Set: Two easy series for legs to get them going.
  • Second Set: Upper body exercises in 6 series with 1-minute cooldowns in between.
  • Third Set: Another round of upper body exercises, psychologically tougher since I used to handle this weight easily.
  • Final Set: Core exercises, finishing strong with two series of planks.

Cooldown

Finished with an active cooldown, stretching out and relaxing. Months of running made this part easier than I remembered.

Notes

I met Alen, a friend who is running the gym, and had a motivating chat before starting. Using dumbbells helps balance strength between both arms, which I prefer. The session was tough, especially after a two-month break, but it was rewarding. Walking to and from the gym helps me mentally prepare and cool down.

Importance of Weight Training for Runners

Weight training is crucial for runners to build leg strength and strengthen the core. It complements running by helping to prevent injuries and improve overall performance.
